Barry MacRay is one of those smokers trying to quit the habit. For him, it is not the first time he tried to say goodbye to tobacco cigarettes. In his vivid memory, he remembers how he started smoking when he was 14 years old and his first cigarette was Red Pall Mall. Forty years after this habit of his began, MacRay is hoping that this time, his smoking cessation goals will be a success.
He has tried other smoking cessation tools and methods before, but instead of relieving his sufferings, these aids only made things worse for him. He said that his heart fluttered when he tried patches. He chewed gun until his gums have bled. He also tried acupuncture, but still his smoking habit did not stop. In hope that electronic cigarettes would be his last resort, he went to visit the store Vapes of Wrath.
It is located close to Long Beach City College. Vapes of Wrath is just one of the many electronic cigarettes shops in Southern California where vapers come to get their supplies. Electronic cigarettes are instruments running on batteries in order to heat up the atomizer that turns liquid solution into almost odorless vapor. Some liquid solutions do not contain nicotine, but former smokers mainly choose nicotine-laced solutions in order to get their nicotine high from the devices.
There are electronic cigarettes that closely resemble tobacco cigarettes, but other products have different looks and styles. Those that are offered in Vapes of Wrath are like small pipes, mostly silver in color (but can be altered to fit the user’s style), have ornate and colorful tips. MacRay joined other younger smokers in the shop that looks like a lounge for vapers with sofas and brightly colored paintings hang on the wall. He pressed the button on his device and started to draw and puff. To others, MacRay might seem to be smoking, but he is not producing smoke; only vapor. This vapor does not smell and disappears quickly, unlike the more repugnant cigarette smoke. According to him, the taste was almost like menthol. It could be good enough for him to finally give up Benson & Hedges. He said that his nephews and nieces were asking him if he can be smoke-free. With electronic cigarettes that can give the closest resemblance to smoking, he said it is likely.
The owner of Vapes of Wrath is James Demetra who only opened the store some three months ago. He relocated to California from Houston and has been living here for eight years. He was managing his guitar repair business when the 20-year old vaper, Blake Robinson, walked in the store. The 31-year old Demetra was interested when he saw Robinson vaping. Afterward, the guitar repair shop was transformed into a vapers hub; although there is still one guitar that can be seen in the store. It serves as a decoration being encased on the wall at the back of the counter. According to him, there were not many stores at that time so he decided to put up Vapes of Wrath.
Demetra himself was a smoker, who quit because his then 4-year old daughter would pull away from him because of the stinking smell of the smoke. He said he did not quit due to dislike for nicotine.
Vapor Spot
Another among the electronic cigarettes shops in LA is the Vapor Spot along San Fernando Valley, specifically on Van Buys Blvd, Sherman Oaks. This is actually the second retail location for the store and was opened last August. Vapor Spot regards itself as the first ever shop all over the nation that focuses on smoke-free lifestyle.
According to its general manager, Louis Alonzo, the store draws on a number of smokers who would like to quit smoking and also others who like to enjoy or are enjoying vaping. Alonzo said that they have a customer, aged 55 years old and said that he’s been a smoker for 35 years.
