Electronic Cigarettes Included In UTA Tobacco Ban
University of Texas at Arlington or UTA implements a tobacco ban wherein electronic cigarettes are included. In an e-mail sent to the staff and faculty members, the university announced that its tobacco smoking policy will be bolstered to include ecigarettes among the prohibited smoking paraphernalia.
Have Always Been In The Policy
Kristin Sullivan, spokeswoman of UTA said that the devices have always been in the policy that started implementation since 2011.
Questions were raised during the previous weeks, which she said were probably due to stories in the news about the widely available and very popular electronic cigarettes.
Growing Trend
In Arlington, there is a business named Rock N Roll Vapes that is owned by John Smith and opened last October 2012. Smith said that he started it outside his home on a minimal income as he vied to take a slice of the cake. Back then, there has already been an increase in ecig demands so he was able to earn enough money to move the business to a more apt physical store seven months later, May 2013.
Unnecessary Ban
There are those who support the ban and there are also those who oppose it. Jason Ma, a smoker, is a Materials Science doctoral student at the university and according to him, ecig inclusion in the smoking policy is not necessary. He has not tried the devices but he said that the vapor coming out of them is not damaging.
Associate Professor Andrew Hunt on the Earth and Environmental Sciences stated that the products are new and have not been fully tested so there is no way of knowing what impacts they can bring to the people and to the environment.
He initially thought that ecigs pose harm to the earth, but they are addictive to consumers who even get high doses of nicotine from some brands. Like other products the unforeseen consequences of using ecigarettes will only be unfolded by time. There could be some effects that do not show from short term use.
Many, like Smith, believe that ecigs are healthier alternatives. He was actually an avid smoker using up 2.5 packs of regular cigarettes from way back his teenage years. Smoking deprived him of running even just across the street. Yet just after one month of quitting through ecigarettes, his health improved that he can now run 3 miles every day.
